Maltalier Information

"Maltaliers are growing in popularity.  They are small, low shedding, easy going dogs that suit many different lifestyles"

A cross between the Maltese and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Maltalier inherits traits from both of these small, delightful breeds.  Although the Maltese parent can be highly strung, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent is extremely docile in nature.  This combination means Maltaliers usually have more "attitude" than the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a softer nature than the Maltese.

Maltaliers suit many different lifestyles and do well in small homes or even apartments.

What Does a Maltalier Look Like?

Typically, first cross Maltaliers (Maltese x Cavalier King Charles) are small dogs with a soft, flat to wavy coat.  They have large, expressive eyes and a "teddy bear" face with long soft ears.  Maltaiers come in a range of colours including red, gold, cream, black, black and tan, white, and tan and white.  They are usually longer in shape, very similar to a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Maltaliers are the small dogs that stand between 28cm and 33cm.

Maltalier Temperament

Maltaliers are alert and affectionate.  They respond well to training.  We recommend that you set out the house rules early and have the whole family do their best to stick to the rules to make sure your Maltalier understands what the rules of the home are.  They get on very well with gentle kids and other family pets but should be supervised.

Maltalier Health

Maltaliers are generally healthy dogs. The average lifespan for a Maltalier is about 12 to 15 years but parentage is one factor that will influence longevity.  Our Maltaliers are DNA Health Tested for genetic health issues to reduce the risk of health issues in our Maltaliers.

Maltalier Grooming

Because Maltaliers are crossed with a Maltese and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel they normally have a low shedding coat and can often make better dogs for people with allergies however allergies are not caused by a particular type of coat but by dander (dead skin cells) which all dogs drop (and humans for that matter).  There are more suitable breeds for allergy sufferers such as Poochons and Moodles because these breeds are even less likely to shed hair when compared to Maltaliers.

Most Maltalier owners prefer to have their dogs clipped (or clip them themselves) about every 6 to 10 weeks.  If the coat is kept at a short to medium length, the Maltalier requires only a small amount of brushing.

Maltalier Exercise Requirements

Maltaliers need only a moderate amount of exercise and will enjoy fetching games.  They are playful and some love the water.   They are well suited for apartment living. They enjoy family activities, securely leashed walks, and off-lead play time in a securely fenced yard.
