Labradoodle Information

"Affectionate and gentle with a great personality. These are just a few reasons why the Labradoodle makes the perfect companion for families, singles and active older people."

One of the most popular and well known of the designer dogs, the Labradoodle is the result of an initial cross between a Labrador and a Poodle.  The Labradoodle is reliable and is being developed as a breed in it’s own right and may one day be recognized by kennel clubs in the future.

The Breed started back in 1989 when the Breeding Manager of the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia in Victoria bred a litter of puppies mating a Standard Poodle and Labrador.  His aim was to produce a dog for vision impaired people who also suffered from allergy problems so had trouble working with the regular guide dog breeds.

Other breeders joined in and after years of work it became possible and desirable to mate Labradoodles with other Labradoodles.  It didn’t take long for the Labradoodle to win people over.  Most people were attracted to the breed because of it’s low shedding coat but increasingly, Labradoodles became popular because of their gentle, friendly personality, trainability and their ability to work with people.

What Does a Miniature Labradoodle Look Like?

Typically, a Miniature Labradoodle is athletic and graceful, yet compact, with substance and medium boning.  Miniature Labradoodles are usually between 35cm and 45cm at the shoulder and weight between 6kg and 14kg.

Miniature Labradoodles come in three different coat types, however, most of our Miniature Labradoodles have a very low to non shedding wool coat.

Hair coat – has a texture of typical dog hair.  Labradoodles with a hair coat will shed and can have several different looks ranging from sparse feathering on the legs and bearded face to a shaggy, scruffy all over look.

Fleece coat – is a very soft textured coat.  It is a non shedding coat and can have a straight to wavy look or a soft and spiraling curl.

Wool coat – is reminiscent of sheeps wool in texture.  It is non shedding and soft with a curly look which can range from loose to a more tight curl.

Miniature Labradoodle Temperament

Affectionate and gentle with a great personality. These are just a few reasons why the Labradoodle makes the perfect companion for families, singles and active older people.  They have a long life span and have a great desire to be part of the family.

Labradoodles should be joyful and energetic when off the lead while being gentle and quiet when handled.  Labradoodles love people and other dogs and pets.

Miniature Labradoodle Health

Miniature Labradoodles are generally healthy dogs. The average lifespan for a Mini Labradoodle is about 12 to 15 years but parentage is one factor that will influence longevity.  Our Miniature Labradoodles are DNA Health Tested for genetic health issues to reduce the risk of health issues in our Labradoodles.

Labradoodle Grooming

Most Labradodoles have a single coat but coats will vary from short to coarse to long and curly so grooming requirements will vary.  Like all low shedding breeds, clipping and brushing is necessary to maintain their coat to the desired length.

Miniature Labradoodle Exercise Requirements

Labradoodles can do well just about anywhere.  Obviously if living in a small apartment then a daily walk is necessary and a Mini Labradoodle would be a better suit to that living arrangement.  Crate training is great, as Labradoodles are happy to sleep in small comfortable spaces but it’s always important to introduce them to crate training first.
